"For the good?"
Personal ambition and greed are two characteristics that are ruining the trust of consumers towards businesses. I agree with the reading that the American people have lost trust in those running major corporations. I was surprised about the poll that listed 90% of people who felt they couldn’t trust those individuals who were running companies. It does seem the companies seem to look after their investors and shareholders instead of the public.
Businesses should exist to not only find success but to
build something that matters so they can help those around the world who are
not as blessed as we are. One example would be Bill and Melinda Gates. My husband is a research scientist. His PhD is in microbiology, and he then
specialized in infectious diseases. He
has often said that a great deal of research that is done for 3rd
world countries are not paid for by the governments or grants but by the Gates Foundation. This is a perfect example of building a
business to be more than what it appears on the surface. Countless research studies have been done to help those living in Africa because of the work of Bill Gates. The reading also gave an example of the
Huntsman Foundation
. I have seen this in
my own life as my mom was treated for cancer in their amazing facility.
One perspective that Handy and I agree on is the idea of
rewarding the skills and innovations of the actual innovators in a company. I have also seen this firsthand. My husband has made breakthroughs in the science
community where he pours his heart and soul into a discovery that should
benefit many. However, everything he
discovers becomes the intellectual property of the company. The Polymerase chain reaction (abbreviated
PCR) changed the world of science.
However, even though the effects were world reaching the scientist was not
rewarded in any way, the company Cetus Corporation was set for life. We
need to change the system.
We need to value those who work to innovate companies, all
the success and value cannot simply go to the shareholders. We need to be working together to help
others who cannot help themselves. We
need to be more like Bill Gates, and the Huntsmans of the world.
